Jordi & Norbert

We met Jordi while we were involved in our Art On The Move project in London. Jordi was working as a collaborator for the Cultural Affairs Office in the Spanish Embassy and soon we got impressed by his energy, positivity and enterprising approach to life. Two years later, when we told him about LoVe, he and his partner Norbert were one of the first couples to come on board in the early days of January 2017.

There is a mixture of peaceful harmony and indefatigable energy in this couple, always focused on how to improve themselves even further but with a lack of vanity that makes them even more admirable.

They share their apartment in Canada Water with Koko, a bouncy French bulldog who wouldn’t stop nibbling Lorenzo’s socks during the photo shoot. Once it was over, Jordi brewed some tea and we started our conversation.

Jordi: Siempre he estado yendo y viniendo del Reino Unido.

How did you meet?

Norbert: Years ago, I was a shop assistant at H&M and Jordi was working as a cleaner. I noticed him going about the shop very early in the morning, at five or six, and a month later I found him on a gay site. It was a Sunday and he was working that day, so I wrote something like “Someone was working very hard this morning.”

Jordi: I have always been coming and going to the UK. I used to study in Spain and then come here in the summer and work. But this time I couldn’t find a job. I was a bit desperate, so this person I shared accommodation with told me about this cleaning company and this is how I ended up working at H&M. I had to leave home at four in the morning to start work at six, so I was like a zombie. I just wanted to get the work done and go back home. One day I got this message on a dating website and I thought, “Who is this random person who is spying me at work?” I freaked out because he didn’t introduce himself anyhow and he didn’t have any pictures on his profile.

Norbert: Then I showed him pictures and we fixed a date. We went for a picnic in the park after work. And that was the 12 August, 2012.

Jordi: I’m normally very cautious in that way, but I just thought: “Let’s go for it. If it goes wrong, it goes wrong”.

What do you like about each other?

Jordi: Norbert is a very funny person, he’s got conversation, he’s very entertaining. At the same time, he’s very humble, not pretentious at all. He is what he is, he doesn’t try to be someone else to impress me.

Norbert: He’s very funny, very ambitious, and he’s always trying to look at life in many different ways. He’s very flexible in life, he’s got a sort of sparkle.

You come from different countries, Hungary and Spain, and you have met in London. What brought you to this city?

Norbert: Now I’m at university. I worked at a psychiatric intensive care unit for three years, and from the hospital I got sponsored to do a degree at King’s College. After this degree I’ll hopefully work for a doctorate in Neuroscience. The aim is to work as a researcher.

Jordi: I did International Relationships and Development Studies. Rather than politics, it’s about how the international system works, how the different actors such as countries, politicians, NGOs, or international organizations work together. It’s about democracy, it’s about peace, it’s about development. We look at the causes of a conflict or a situation, the possible resources, who’s involved in the whole thing. And they encourage us not to look at it just from our Western perspective. For instance, we should ask ourselves: “What would and Asian person think about this? What would a person from Africa or Latin America think about this situation?” It’s very good for critical thinking, for seeing things in a different way.

What have you learned from each other?

Jordi: I’ve learned to be more relaxed. I’m very hyperactive. Also, the way I react to situations is very Spanish. I’m very sentimental, I shout for the minimal thing that happens to me. Norbert has taught me to react in a subtler way. I’ve also learned that you have to work hard for what you want and that you have to be patient to achieve things. Things don’t happen in one day. He’s also very humble and I’m trying to learn that. Obviously, he wants to achieve many things as well, but the way he wants to do it is very different from the way I want it. I’m still learning that.

Norbert: I think one of the things I’ve learned is that you should not hold back, just do it. Jordi is also very good at socializing, at connecting with people, at building relationships. I think that now I’m very focused on that, this is something I’ve been doing since I started university in September. And how he thinks about life: he doesn’t think there is a limit. He never thinks that he’s not good enough for something, he always thinks “I could do it”. This kind of view of life is something I carry with me.

Jordi: We’ve shaped each other, definitely.
